2/27/2018 This Is What We Know About Nikolas Cruz, The Florida High School Shooting SuspectRead NowBuzzfeed News reporter, Brianna Sacks in her article, "This Is What We Know About Nikolas Cruz, The Florida High School Shooting Suspect", alleges that the suspect of the Florida high school shooting is a troubled and alarming teenager. She develops her claim by first narrating how the suspect had been expelled from the high school that the shooting occurred, "Officials identified the suspect in the shooting as Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old former student who was expelled for disciplinary reasons from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where the shooting took place." Nikolas Cruz, the suspect of the Florida high school shooting, had been expelled from the high school where the shooting took place for his improper behavior on the school grounds. Then, Sacks appeals to ethos by stating how a Douglas High School teacher saw that other students feared Cruz, "Jim Gard, a math teacher at the school, told the Miami Herald that Cruz had previously been identified as a potential threat to other students." Jim Gard, a math teacher in Douglas High School, stated that students perceived Cruz as a frightening individual. After, she appeals to logos and ethos by including a quote of a former friend of Cruz, stating how the suspect was obsessed with guns, "'He used to tell me he would shoot rats with his BB gun and he wanted this kind of gun, and how he liked to always shoot for practice,' 16-year-old Joshua Charo, who went to school with Cruz, told the Miami Herald." Joshua Charo, a student that had some communication with Cruz, described some of the disturbing statements Cruz had previously told him, such as how he relished killing animals with his guns. With the statements that Charo claimed that Cruz has stated and how many students saw Cruz alarming, it is no surprised that a rebellious teenage boy that enjoys killing animals and has a gun obsession would be a suspect in he school shooting. Lastly, Sacks utilizes ethos, by presenting a comment made by a student about Cruz's last relationship, "Victoria Olvera ,a junior, ... said that Cruz was abusive while he and his ex-girlfriend were together". Victoria Olvera, a student at Douglas High School, stated how the suspect had mistreated and abused his previous girlfriend. Based on this statement, it is easy to identify that Cruz is violent by his anomalous way of treating his former girlfriend. Sacks' purpose is to inform in order for Americans to be aware of the suspect's past eccentric and parlous behaviors. She establishes an informative tone for Americans to know facts about the suspect. The author uses simplistic diction, utilizing words, like "opened fire", "custody", and "issues"; overall, the simplistic diction provided more people to be able to understand key information about the suspect without knowing a complex vocabulary.
