Buzzfeed News reporter, Alicia Melville-Smith in her article, “Hundreds Of Deadly Wildfires Are Raging Across Portugal And Spain,” argues that the majority of wildfires in Spain and Portugal could of been prevented. She supports her claim by first utilizing pathos by demonstrating photographs of the actual wildfires and talks about the resulted number of deaths, ”At least 34 people have died, hundreds are injured, and many more are missing as the blazes burn on.” Melville-Smith asserts that various individuals have lost their lives, and even more are injured or missing. Then mentions that on Sunday, October 16, 2017, there were 500 wildfires recorded in that day only, which was dreadful compared to the number of wildfires in more than a decade for Portugal. After, talks about the local community attempt to stop the wildfires, "Volunteers use a water hose to fight a wildfire raging near houses in the outskirts of Obidos, Portugal”. The author states the community’s effort in ceasing the wildfires. Finally, she supports her claim by stating the percentage of humans that are in risk because of wildfires burning across the region ,“About 105 fires are burning across the region and around 15% of them pose a risk to human life.“ The author uses logos, in order to back up her claim by stating that 15% of people’s lives are in risk because of the 105 wildfires burning across the region. Melville-Smith’s purpose is to inform people that have not heard about the wildfires in order for them to be aware of the state that Portugal and Spain’s environment is in. The author uses primary diction, by using simplistic words that most people use daily, such as “attempting”, “extinguishing”, and “massive". She creates a morose tone for individuals that are reading about the disastrous actions, such as the number of deaths and the risk people around the region confront, due to the abundant amount of wildfires in Spain and Portugal. https://www.buzzfeed.com/aliciamelvillesmith/hundreds-of-deadly-wildfires-are-raging-across-portugal-and?utm_term=.ab7yKXjb8#.ghAL70DWa
