Buzzfeed reporter, Brianna Sacks, in her article "9,000 Massage Parlors In The US Are Sex Trafficking Women", informs that there are thousands of massage parlors that are centers to human trafficking and prostitution all across the United States. She develops her claim by first appealing to logos by introducing a shocking statistic,"...Polaris, a group fighting modern slavery, conducted a study of more than 32,000 reported human trafficking cases in 2017 and found... rundown, massage parlors accounted for 2,949 calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline over the period 2007 - 2016, Polaris reported... they are popping up at alarming rates in every state across the US". Polaris discovered that the second most common call to the National Human Trafficking Hotline was involving illegal massage parlors that are growing in a rapid rate all around the United States. Then, Sacks explains how, "The victims are primarily immigrants from China or South Korea who speak little or no English, are burdened with debt, and are desperate to help support their children." Majority of the sex trafficking victims are immigrants from China or South Korea that do not speak English, but are involved in debt. After, then the author narrates the mysterious characteristics that illegal massage parlors obtain in reviews and in person, "Reviews, being open at odd hours, showcasing nude modeling or lingerie photos, and being cash-only are very clear red flags that a massage parlor is forcing women to perform sexual acts, Keyhan said. Covered windows, buzzers, and cheap prices are other indicators that a parlor is illegal". The reviews for the illegal massage parlors are quite peculiar since they open at unfamiliar hours and also exhibit inappropriate pictures on their reviews. Finally, Sacks appeals to ethos by stating how the Los Angeles County is now enforcing new rules to catch illegal massage parlors, "In Los Angeles County, officials are now requiring routine inspections to catch and eradicate sex-trafficking massage businesses. San Francisco recently regulated hours of operation, resulting in the shuttering of more than 100 illegal parlors." Massage businesses located in Los Angeles County are now required to have routine inspections, in order to view the environment of the massage parlors and have regulated hours of operation. Sack's purpose is to bring about change in order to ensure that illegal massage parlors are abolished, and a reduction to human trafficking. Sacks creates a infuriated tone for Americans that unaware about what obsolete, unusual, underpriced "massage parlors" are actually doing. Overall, Sacks' diction was straightforward and easy to comprehend, as she utilized words, such as "second-highest volume", "rundown", and "establishments".
